The Friends of Down Syndrome was formed in September 2013 when a group of volunteers came together and decided that they could best help those with Down syndrome if they pooled together their talents and efforts.  So, they formed a legal entity that would help teens and adults with Down syndrome.

The members believe that all individuals with Down syndrome can reach a higher level of self-esteem and independence if they are given the opportunity to learn and develop far beyond the typical standard years of school.  This idea and the fact that individuals with Down syndrome never stop learning is what prompted the formation of the Down Syndrome Academy.  We believe that all individuals with the proper education and training can become very productive and involved members of the communities where they live and grow.
